The walks listed on this page are ‘taster events’ which are open to members of the public. Our insurance policy permits non-members to join two walks, but after that, if they wish to join a third or subsequent walk, they are expected to join the club.

Find out how to join the club now.

Our taster walks do not access any privately owned former railway land or sites (for reasons explained under About | FAQ), but follow footpaths, bridleways, trails etc. which originated as railways, tramways or wagonways. There is nothing to stop non-members exploring these routes on their own, but we sort out the logistics of the visit, usually arranging a linear walk, i.e. walking one way and taking a bus or train the other. In areas where there is no public transport, we may arrange a circular walk (e.g. out by an old railway and back by a canal or even Roman road) or, where this is impossible, arrange car sharing.
Joining a club walk also gives non-members the opportunity to meet like-minded enthusiasts, and to benefit from their extensive knowledge of old railways. Often, our walk leaders research these routes in advance and bring along interpretive resources, such as archive photographs, books and historical notes.
