Apr 2022 – Walk Report – Elan Valley walk 26/3/22

Postponed from October because of a severe weather warning, the walk went ahead on a perfect spring day. It may have made a bit of club history as the majority of participants – 4 out of 7 – were Wales residents, a first for any RR walk to the best of my knowledge. The route was already shortened because of a known rock fall at Devil’s Gulch on the upper section and we agreed a further late change because of reports that sections towards the lower end may be closed for improvement work which would have made a hazardous road walk necessary. On the day it appeared that this wasn’t so but as it is a less scenic part of the route we decided to omit it anyway and did an out and back walk along the section above the rock fall instead, then drove to the originally planned starting point after lunch! Wholesale tree felling had dramatically changed the section beside the next reservoir – Garreg Ddu – in recent months, destroying a very pleasant woodland stretch but opening up fresh views. The rest of the walk passed without incident and overall a good day was had by all. (Chris Parker)
